Buoyant ecologies float lab

Port of Oakland
United States
2019

Project overview

Float Lab completed its five-year project at the Port of Oakland (Port). The floating laboratory gathered information about marine life and data about the use of a floating structure in an area vulnerable to sea level rise. Float Lab arrived in August 2019 and was installed in the Port’s shallow water habitat adjacent to Middle Harbor Shoreline Park. Float Lab is a prototype for an ecologically productive floating breakwater. In October 2024, Float Lab moved from the Port of Oakland to Treasure Island to continue its research.
