Project overview

The Project tested two Taylor battery-electric top handlers and three BYD Motors battery-electric yard tractors with the Cavotec Smart Plug-In System, gaining insights to improve the equipment for future use. The project also included terminal reconstruction, featuring new switchgear and electrical infrastructure to support the EV equipment's energy needs.

Nexigen, the Dock Electrification Plan, is aligned with the Port of Barcelona's environmental sustainability goal, Strategic Plan 2021-2025. It is a key part of the Port of Barcelona's energy transition plan, which aims achieve 50% emissions reduction by 2030 and to be a carbon-neutral port by 2050. The plan also considers energy supply with certified 100% renewable origin, and a new 220/25 kV port substation within the Port of Barcelona that will be connected to the Cerdà Substation of Red Eléctrica Española (REE/redeia) (National Electricity Grid operator) that is currently under construction. The first phases of the plan became operational in 2024.

The Supply Chain Carbon Calculator (Lite) is a web application developed for Ports of Auckland to allow customers to calculate emissions from the transportation of their container cargo on road and rail across the North Island. POAL has also created a more sophisticated supply chain emissions tool which offers greater complexities of real-world infrastructure and interactions.

In order to address the challenge for European ports of reducing GHG emissions while remaining competitive, the Ports of Antwerp, Barcelona, Venlo and Constanta will implement green port innovation demonstrations across four main pillars: clean energy production and supply, sustainable port design, modal shift and flows optimization, and digital transformation. The PIONEERS project is coordinated by Port of Antwerp and a consortium of 45 partners.

In July 2023, Maersk's first methanol dual-fuel engine vessel bunkered 1,000 metric tons of green methanol at Odfjell Terminals Korea in Ulsan before embarking on her maiden voyage, 21,500 km from South Korea to Denmark.

Port of Açu has launched a platform to accelerate new energy projects, including projects that will combine renewable energy, low carbon and renewable hydrogen production and industrial consumption at the same site. The renewable energy and the renewable and low carbon hydrogen developments will be available for the consumption of Açu’s new industries, including the fertilizer industry, hydrogen chemical byproducts and an hot-briquetted iron (HBI) plant for the steel sector.

As of January 2024, the Port of Virginia is the first major US East Coast port to power its entire operation using 100 percent clean electricity. The move to clean electricity is a result of a Power Purchase Agreement with Dominion Energy and a rider with Rappahannock Electric Cooperative. The Power Purchase Agreement ensures the generation and allocation of enough clean energy to support all current and future operational megawatt requirements.

The Low-Emission Technology Initiative is one of the key ways the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is working towards its goal under the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy to phase out all port-related emissions by 2050, in support of the Government of Canada’s commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. To date, the Low-Emission Technology Initiative has helped fund various pilot projects of low-carbon fuels and technologies in partnership with the province and industry partners across a range of port-related sectors, such as container trucking, terminal operations, harbor vessels and commercial ferries. These pilots are intended to accelerate the transition away from fossil-fuel-powered equipment at the Port of Vancouver by demonstrating the effectiveness of low-emission alternatives.

Fortescue, with support from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), government agencies, research institutes, and industry partners, has successfully completed propulsion and manoeuvrability trials of its Singapore-registered Fortescue Green Pioneer in the Port of Singapore. The trials were conducted using 6.4 m3 (4.4 tonnes) of liquid ammonia, in combination with diesel and Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a second-generation biofuel, as marine fuel over 10 days from 23 April 2024 to 2 May 2024.
