Project overview

This pilot project deployed 487 NASA-patented SPEARS units containing a proprietary reagent for 2 years to extract forever chemicals including Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from sediment where dredging is unfeasible. The units absorbed over 1,284 µg of PCBs. After achieving site goals, the SPEARS are safely removed and treated with a green process to destroy the PCBs.

Originally established in 2014, the purpose of the 20-member Community Liaison Group (CLG) is two-fold and circular: (1) Communication: To act as a vital voice for communities and stakeholders that border the Port. (2) Information Sharing: To share with communities the details of Port projects, decisions and initiatives and bring comments back to the group.
The reconstituted CLG was formed following application and assessment in early 2023, with members best placed to represent the interests of a broad remit of Port users, tenants, stakeholders and neighbours selected to fill the positions.

Sunken Seaweed uses a 1/4-acre area of ocean at approximately 25 feet deep to outplant, cultivate, grow, harvest, and monitor native Southern California seaweed species, studying the viability of seaweed aquaculture in San Diego Bay. Results from the pilot project highlight the many benefits such as carbon sequestration, bioremediation, improved water quality, enhanced ecosystem productivity, and commercialization.

This project designed and deployed a marine vessel that uses skimming technology to remove debris. During the trial period, the vessel collected 110,000 pounds of debris from the San Diego Bay. A database logged details about the collections, as well as tracked variables that influence marine debris accumulation in the Bay, such as seasons, weather events, and tide.

In collaboration with Swedish company Rentunder, a new Boatwash technology was developed that allows sailboats and motorboats up to 53 feet long to enter an enclosed basin for cleaning by mechanical brushes. This pilot project offers an alternative to in-water hull cleaning by capturing residuals and particulate matter, aiming to reduce copper discharge in bays and harbors. Water quality sampling was conducted during three controlled cleaning events.

The ECHO Program, led by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, aims to reduce commercial shipping's impact on at-risk whales off British Columbia. By partnering with over 100 groups, it has reduced underwater noise by up to 50% and promotes quieter ship designs and practices, benefiting endangered southern resident killer whales.

The Port of Tacoma has constructed, preserved, or participated in 21 sites, totaling over 213 acres, ranging from habitat creation for juvenile salmonids in Clear Creek, to restoration and conservation of sites important to migratory birds, and the creation of public access at ports. Some projects include multi stakeholder stewardship agreements and collaborations.
